Basic Information

LavaMaeˣ is a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming the way communities serve individuals experiencing homelessness. Founded in 2014 in San Francisco, LavaMaeˣ began by converting public transportation buses into mobile showers and toilets, addressing the critical lack of hygiene facilities for the unhoused.

Key Services and Programs:

  • Mobile Hygiene Services: Providing mobile showers and toilets to individuals experiencing homelessness, restoring dignity and promoting health.
  • Pop-Up Care Villages: Organizing community events that offer essential services such as medical care, haircuts, and legal assistance, all under one roof.
  • LavaMaeˣ Connect: A global community offering training, toolkits, and resources to help others establish similar mobile hygiene programs in their communities.

In 2023, LavaMaeˣ announced the closure of its programs and operations due to an unprecedented budget shortfall.

Despite this, the organization continues to support and mentor grassroots projects worldwide, aiming to expand access to hygiene and sanitation services for those in need.
